With Wednesday now out on Netflix, Jenna Ortega introduced herself to the world as this generation's new Wednesday Addams. In addition, as a cherry on top, the series also co-stars Christina Ricci, who played the role back in the '90s Addams Family movies, in a new role as Marilyn Thornhill and the actresses' appearances are seen as a "passing the baton" moment.
However, despite sharing scenes together multiple times throughout the series, Ortega did not ask for any advice from Ricci while filming as she revealed in a recent interview with co-star Emma Myers for MTV News. The actress came to the decision as she felt that she doesn't want her performance to be similar to Ricci's version.
"No, I think when she was on set, neither one of us said Wednesday once to each other," she said. "I don’t think she wanted to get in the way of my performance and feel like she was overbearing. And then I felt like I didn’t want to pull up something that she did 30 years ago, for one, the sake of my own benefit, but two, I didn’t want to rip her off. And I didn’t want to be too much like her."
Ortega also pointed out that her take on Wednesday Addams in the series is very different from what was done in the '90s films since her version has more fantasy and supernatural elements.
"Our show has superpowers and outcasts and evil ghost pilgrims," the actress continued. "So they’re two very different people, our Wednesdays, I think. Our characters in the show are polar opposites. They have a sweet little relationship."
There is no doubt that Ricci's performance as Wednesday Addams in the '90s became iconic for most people and it's understandable to hear that Ortega didn't ask for advice since she wants to hold on to her own and hopefully introduce a new flavor to the character to another generation.
Based on what we've seen in the first season, there is no doubt that the actress managed to pull off a new and unique take on Wednesday Addams that we've never seen before and, just like what Ricci did in the '90s, she can also potentially become iconic on the role when the series runs for more seasons.
