Is Hulu's We Were the Lucky Ones based on a true story? Coming out on March 28 is a new series led by Bullet Train's Logan Lerman and Joey King, where a Jewish family gets separated at the brink of World War II. That said, is the story based on real events? Here's all you need to know.

What is Hulu's We Were the Lucky Ones About? Story Explored

Starring the likes of award-winning The Kissing Booth and The Act star Joey King, opposite of Percy Jackson and The Perks of Being a Wallflower star Logan Lerman, Hulu's We Were the Lucky Ones explores the devastating journey of a Jewish family in the duration of World War II.

Within eight episodes, Joey King plays the role of Halina Kurc, aka siblings with Logan Lerman's Addy in the Kurc family. A gripping, heartwrenching story of how the two families end up reuniting with one another in the end.

Considering the potentiality of its historical record, this begs the question of whether the story is purely fictional or if it is actually based on true events.

We Were the Lucky Ones is based on the novel written by Georgia Hunter. The novel happens to be inspired by the actual history of Hunter's ancestors, reflecting the Polish Jewish family's journey throughout World War II.

As the trailer declared, We Were the Lucky Ones was inspired by the true story of Hunter's words on how the survival from the Nazis' reign over death camps offers little to no glimmer of hope in escaping the horrors of its reality.

"I went into this particular project as a family historian, not really as an author," Hunter explained on People recently, "I had never written a book before, so I set out in 2008 to unearth and record the family story."

Hunter added that she "never thought the story would feel so relevant" when she set out to write it in 2008, "It feels like history is repeating itself... there's no more important time to share stories about the Holocaust."
