We all know that Stephen Colbert is probably the biggest Lord of the Rings fan in the world. With that in mind, it's no surprise that the host of The Late Show went out of his way to track down director Peter Jackson in an effort to convince the filmmaker to direct a spin-off film featuring Colbert's character in The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.
Colbert was recently in New Zealand where he got to hang out with the Prime Minister and Kiwi celebrities like Lucy Lawless and Bret McKenzie. But knowing Colbert, his sole purpose for visiting the country was to pitch his Lord of the Rings spin-off to Jackson. Sure, Jackson isn't having any of it but Colbert won't take no for an answer and so we have this glorious 12-minute skit.
So what's Colbert's idea for a spin-off? It's all about his character simply known as 'Laketown Spy' who turns out to be Aragorn's hotter twin brother Darrylgorn who Arwen secretly yearns for. Oh, and it's full title is (take a deep breath, everyone) Stephen Colbert Presents Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings Series The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug's 'The Laketown Spy' Is Darrylgorn In Darrylgorn Rising: The Rise Of Darrylgorn The Prequel Of Part One: Chapter One.
Jackson isn't the only one who has a cameo in the spin-off. We also get to see Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortenson vehemently refusing to reprise their roles as Gandalf and Aragorn. Elijah Wood is pretty game, though, so Colbert has that working for him.
It's an interesting concept but alas, Jackson might be too busy (or is simply uninterested) in pursuing the project. Maybe Colbert will get lucky next time he visits New Zealand.
