Stephen Colbert Heads for New Zealand to Film Lord of the Rings 'Spin-Off' With Peter Jackson

Stephen Colbert is making sure that people will not forget that he is the biggest fan of all things J.R.R. Tolkien. The host of The Late Show is heading for New Zealand to film a "spinoff" of Amazon's upcoming Lord of the Rings series.

Vulture confirms that Colbert will be bringing The Late Show to New Zealand this month to film a week's worth of episodes set in the country. Amazingly, one of Colbert's special features is an interview with The Hobbit trilogy director Peter Jackson. In addition to that, the two will reportedly film a Lord of the Rings "spinoff" video, which sounds almost too good to be true.

Although there is little doubt that Colbert is planning to prove that he is the ultimate Tolkien fanboy, some of his segments will also focus on other things around New Zealand. Colbert has already secured an interview with Prime Minister Jacinta Ardern. Additionally, he's filming an interview with Kiwi celebrities Lucy Lawless and Bret McKenzie, who also happened to be in two Lord of the Rings movies so you can probably guess what they'll talk about.

The Lord of the Rings TV series is currently being filmed in New Zealand and the entire project is still cloaked in mystery. For now, we know that it is going to be a prequel to Tolkien's book trilogy and will star Will Poulter, Markella Kavanagh, and Game of Thrones alum Joseph Mawle. The show has not yet been given an official release date but stay tuned for more updates on this story.

Colbert's Lord of the Rings-inspired episodes of The Late Show will air starting Monday, November 18.
