With the series getting ready for the second season, Vinland Saga creator Yukimura Makoto addressed the anime-only scenes of the first season in a recent interview.

The interview was published by Crunchyroll in English and features the manga author Makoto along with anime director Shuhei Yabuta and series composition writer Hiroshi Seko. It was originally published in Japanese via the official anime website.

There, they shared their insight into the production of season 1 as well as what fans can look forward to in the second season.

One of the key topics that they discussed in the interview was their impression of the anime-only scenes. While the first season is a faithful adaptation of the source material, the anime did have some original scenes that fleshed out some moments.

First, creator Yukimura mentioned that he was happy to see the events of the manga play out on screen. He also mentioned that he “felt a sense of gratitude regarding the fifth and sixth episodes.”

This is because those episodes showed Thorfinn in his youth as he worked for Askeladd.

Meanwhile, the manga skipped over those events and only showed what happened when Thorfinn was sixteen. Because of this, Yukimura felt that the anime did a great job in this regard.

Writer Seko remarked that this was done because he wanted to show Thorfinn’s growth in chronological order.

Director Yabuta also shared how he was interested in seeing how the six-year-old Thorfinn will adjust to being suddenly taken by Vikings.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Vinland Saga is an anime series that’s based on the manga of the same name by Makoto Yukimura. The manga is serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine.

The series follows Thorfinn, a young boy who is on a quest for revenge on his father’s killer. In his youth, Thorfinn’s father was killed by the pirate Askeladd. Soon, Thorfinn joins Askeladd’s crew and he constantly challenges his father’s killer.

The first season was animated by Wit Studio, and it aired from July to December 2019. The series was then renewed for a second season but with studio MAPPA being in charge of animation.

Vinland Saga Season 2 will premiere sometime in 2023.
