Initially released on Amazon Prime Video in 2019, Vinland Saga Season 1 will be available on Netflix and HIDIVE starting July 7, 2022.
The anime’s release on Netflix and HIDIVE was initially announced back in June on the Vinland Saga official Twitter. More information was then announced during Anime Expo 2022.
With this release, anime fans will be able to watch the anime on more platforms ahead of the Vinland Saga Season 2 release.
HIDIVE also confirmed during its Anime Expo 2022 panel that the season’s release on the platform will feature the Sentai Filmworks English dub.
On Netflix, Vinland Saga Season 1 will be available in its original Japanese dub. While Netflix Japan released its English dub for the anime, there’s no word yet on if the worldwide release of the show will feature this dub.
Vinland Saga Season 1 was animated by Wit Studio and aired in 2 cours from July to December 2019 on NHK General TV in Japan. The anime is an adaptation of the ongoing historical manga series of the same name by Makoto Yukimura.
The Vinland Saga manga has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine since April 2005, making it one of the longest-running ongoing series in the magazine. It continues to be popular and highly praised, with the series earning the 36th Kodansha Manga Award for Best General Manga
Vinland Saga is set in the Viking Age, specifically in 9th century England when it was conquered by the Danish. The series follows Thorfinn as he journeys as a pirate under Commander Askeladd, his father’s killer. While serving under Askeladd, Thorfinn vows to avenge his father’s death.
Season 2 of Vinland Saga will premiere in January 2023 and will run for 24 episodes. Unlike the first season, Vinland Saga Season 2 is animated by MAPPA.
This is the second time that an anime by Wit Studio has been picked up by MAPPA, with the first being Attack on Titan: The Final Season.
