The first episode of Tomo-chan Is a Girl! was released yesterday after much anticipation. Soon after its premiere, fans praised Rie Takahashi’s tomboy performance in Tomo-chan Is a Girl! as Tomo Aizawa.

Takahashi is a popular voice actor who has voiced lots of major characters over the years, so it might not be surprising that she did a great job in this new role.

Though Tomo-chan is a departure from her typical roles as she has a deeper register and is more of a tomboy in this anime.

Rie Takahashi is best known for voicing characters such as Megumin in KonoSuba, Emilia in Re:Zero, Takagi-san in Teasing Master Takagi-san, Mash Kyrielight in Fate/Grand Order, and Sumi in Rent-A-Girlfriend, among others.

Most recently, Takahashi voiced Anzu Hoshino in Netflix’s Romantic Killer. She was also cast as the voice of Ai Hoshino in the highly anticipated anime adaptation of Oshi no Ko.

For the most part, Takahashi plays softer-voiced characters. While there have been some exceptions over the years, her most popular characters typically have higher-pitched voices.

Her new role as Tomo Aizawa is one of those exceptions. This is because Tomo is a sporty tomboy with a deeper voice than what you’d expect.

In fact, she’s often mistaken for a boy, and her tomboy identity is central to the anime’s premise.

In the series, Tomo confesses to her childhood friend, Junichiro Kubota. Though Junichiro doesn’t take the confession seriously as he thinks of Tomo as more of a guy friend than a girl.

Following the first episode’s release, viewers shared their thoughts on Twitter and Reddit.

On Reddit specifically, many fans were surprised to find out that it was Takahashi that voiced Tomo given how far it is from her typical voice.

Despite it being not a typical character of hers, fans believe that she pulled off the character well. Because of this, many are now even more excited to see the next episodes.

On Twitter, #tomochan trended with over 14k tweets. This goes to show how popular the series is, which means it might be one of the highlights of the Winter 2023 season.

If you enjoyed Takahashi’s performance, you can watch her as Tomo in the next Tomo-chan Is a Girl! episode on Crunchyroll next week.
