The Witch and the Beast features lots of powerful characters with unique abilities. Based on the anime’s events so far, here is a list of The Witch and the Beast characters ranked based on who is the strongest.
Take note that this list features only characters that have appeared in the anime so far. As each character’s true power levels haven’t been fully shown yet, this list is also based on their feats shown in the anime.

Marie
Marie is the apprentice of the witch Ione who was the antagonist of The Witch and the Beast's first episode. Based on her appearance, it’s fair to say that Marie is one of the weakest characters.
Even though she’s a witch’s apprentice, she wasn’t shown to have much in the way of abilities. What’s more, she was also manipulated by Ione and turned into a key for her ritual spell.
Kiera Haines
Kiera Haines is a mage who works as a police officer in Hayden. She is a major character in the show’s The Witch’s Pastime arc, which happened in episodes 3 and 4.
While she’s a mage, Kiera Haines hasn't shown much combat abilities as she acted like a typical human detective. Of course, if she does appear in the future and shows some abilities, her ranking can shoot up.

Shulk and Loran
As Shulk and Loran were the antagonists of The Witch’s Pastime arc, they seem to be quite strong based on their feats. It’s soon revealed that their power comes mostly from their grimoire.
Without the grimoire, Shulk and Loran aren’t that powerful. Even with the book in hand, they were quickly dispatched in the events of the fourth episode.
Helga Velvette
Guideau and AshafAs the last survivor of the Velvette family, Helga is a promising character in terms of strength. So far though, she is still a weak mage when it comes to combat.
While she can materialize swords and is quite nimble, Helga’s magic isn’t the best for combat. As such, she has been shown to need help from Guideau and Ashaf in battle.
Still, it’ll be interesting to see if she becomes stronger, especially as she’s a descendant of one of the Origins.
Johan
Johan is the partner of the witch Phenora Kristoffel. His abilities include skilled swordsmanship, as well as self-healing and resurrection. In fact, despite getting his throat slit, Johan was revived.
Given that Johan catches the Necromancer at the end of episode 5, there’s an argument to be made that he’s stronger than the Necromancer.
Still, the Necromancer’s ability to command undead minions should give him the edge in a 1-on-1 fight.
Necromancer
Based on his feats in the Beauty and Death arc, the Necromancer is quite a powerful being, at least when he summons his undead minions.
His power should still land him in the middle of this list, though he should be soundly beaten by other characters in the series.
Ione
Ione is the first antagonist in the anime, and she is dispatched by the end of the first episode. This might make her seem weak, but her abilities still make her a heavy hitter.
That’s because Ione was able to take down Guideau in her human form. She was only defeated by Guideau upon entering her alter ego, which made her incredibly strong.
Phanora Kristoffel
As an expert in necromancy, Phanora Kristoffel is an incredibly strong witch. Her power is centered around her ability to resurrect the dead and command them.
Her skill in necromancy is much stronger than the Necromancer antagonist in the Witch and Beauty arc. This makes sense considering her heritage as a witch of the Kristoffel family.
Lowell
and Lowell is the assistant of Matt Cugat, a high-ranking official in the Paladin Corps. Given her status, Lowell should have strong combat prowess.
Her skills haven’t been shown off much so far, but episode 7 showed that her offensive ability is strong enough to take down Matt Cugat.
Of course, this was thanks to her attack coming out of nowhere given her betrayal. Based on what was shown, Matt should still have more power in a straight fight, but the signs point out that she can hold her own.
Ashaf
As one of the two main characters, Ashaf’s abilities have been shown plenty of times. Ashaf’s powers include the ability to use protective magic, command crows, and even control someone’s mind.
He’s a strong character for sure, but in a proper fight, his offensive abilities may not be enough against someone like Matt.
Much like the other characters, there’s an argument to be made here, as some fans think his being caught by Matt in their episode 7 fight was part of his plan.
Matt Cugat
Thanks to his ice abilities, Matt Cugat is no doubt one of the strongest characters so far in the series, at least when it comes to combat.
Even though he was betrayed and seemed to have been killed by Lowell, the feats that he’s shown make him a tough character to face in a face-off. In fact, some think that this is not the last that we’ve seen of him.
Executioner
The mysterious Executioner is an incredibly strong individual as he was able to brainwash the Paladin Corps at the end of episode 7.
From the looks of it, he’s the strongest villain in the anime so far, and he will no doubt be a tough opponent for the show’s main characters.
Guideau
The full extent of Guideau’s abilities has not been revealed yet, but it’s already fair to say that she’s one of, if not the strongest character in The Witch and the Beast anime so far.
This is thanks to her masked alter ego, which was strong enough to quickly subdue Ione. She hasn’t used the power much so far, but it’s clear that this curse of hers massively increases her combat skills.
