When it comes to ensemble casting, there will always be the mainstays as well as the fringe characters. Oftentimes, the main cast are usually those who have been with us since the first few episodes (if it's a series) or have played major role and made major decisions (for movies).
In The Walking Dead, one can consider this to be Rick Grimes. After all, we've seen the post-apocalypse from his point of view in season one. We followed his decision-making the moment he made friends with our favorite Pizza Boy to the many zombies he has killed, and even to the people that he has had to attack or kill.
All those moments, we thought he was the untouchable one. The guy who might lose an arm or lose a wife, but one who won't lose out. but in an interview with LA Times, Rick actor Andrew Lincoln seems to be hinting otherwise.
"I'm the dude that woke up in the hospital in the very beginning—I'd like to think there's a bit of job security there. But then suddenly Negan turns up with that crazy baseball bat, and all bets are off. Don't get me wrong. I think Rick is very much in the fabric of the show. But then, so was Glenn. We're all expendable on this show."
That bit about Glenn is very much true. If anything, after Rick, Glenn was the other foundation, even more so than Daryl, who used to be a slight pain in the ass like his bro Merle. Thinking about the pace of The Walking Dead, Negan is supposed to be the game changer, and perhaps this is what the showrunners meant—not in a big bam! way but rather, a slow death for the main cast, enough that killing them off becomes another turn for the heroic or the horrific.
In any case, Lincoln's feelings of Rick's potential death came back in the Say Yes episode, and while we've been seeing betrayals and uncertainties left and right, we might not be in sudden-death, Game of Thrones territory yet.
The Walking Dead airs on Sundays on AMC.
