As reported by Variety, The Mandalorian and Grogu director Jon Favreau revealed on stage that the upcoming film was entirely filmed in Los Angeles, California.
This made history as the first Star Wars movie shot in its entirety in the vicinity of Los Angeles, which is where a lot of movies and TV shows in history have been filmed.
"I’d like to thank the California Film Commission for allowing us to have a tax incentive here and allowing us to be the first Star Wars film to be made entirely in Los Angeles," Favreau said on stage in the movie's Los Angeles premiere event.
All Star Wars movies in the past have been shot outside North America, most commonly in the United Kingdom. However, The Mandalorian series was filmed entirely in California, which paved the way for the movie to be shot there as well.
During his speech, Favreau also thanked his father for introducing him to the original Star Wars movie when he was 10 years old.
"That movie changed my life with that first shot. I sat by my dad’s side 49 years ago watching Star Wars for the first time, and tonight, I’m getting to sit next to my dad and watch this movie. Thank you, Dad," he said.
What to Expect in The Mandalorian and Grogu
In The Mandalorian and Grogu, the evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu.
The cast includes Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, Jonny Coyne, Martin Scorsese, and Steve Blum. The Clone Wars character Embo is expected to make an appearance.
It is slated for release exclusively in theaters and on IMAX on May 22. It is the first Star Wars theatrical release since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.
