The Last of Us Episode 5 premiered early this week and although it was a welcome change for the series, it also meant that viewers got their hearts broken just as the weekend started. Endure and Survive just gave Joel and Ellie one of the hardest challenges they could face in the HBO show.
In The Last of Us Episode 5, viewers got to see what Henry and Sam were up to before they held Joel and Ellie at gunpoint in the previous episode. As it turns out, the brothers had witnessed the bandits attacking the duo and had followed them up the high-rise to enlist their help.
Henry proposes moving through the tunnels of Kansas City and Joel reluctantly agrees. While taking a break and allowing the children to read, Henry admits to Joel that he gave the leader of the revolutionary movement to FEDRA in exchange for medication for Sam's leukemia. When the man was killed by FEDRA, Kathleen took over and began pursuing Henry.
When they finally emerge from the tunnels and make their way through the suburbs, they are attacked by a sniper. Although Joel manages to take the sniper down, he realizes that the man was working with Kathleen to track them and her men soon arrive to take them down.
Ellie, Henry, and Sam are cornered and just as Henry surrenders to allow the children to escape, the Infected emerge from the ground and attack the revolutionaries. A "bloater" then kills Perry while Kathleen is killed by a child Clicker.
The group manage to escape amidst the chaos but as they hide out in a hotel, Sam reveals to Ellie that he was injured by a Clicker. She uses her blood on the wound and promises the boy that it will cure him but when she wakes up the next day, the infected Sam attacks her.
Joel tries to shoot Sam but is stopped by Henry who then shoots his own brother. The guilt-stricken Henry then shoots himself before Joel and Ellie could stop him.
In the end, Joel and Ellie bury the brothers and Ellie leaves a message on Sam's notepad before they continue on their way west.
The Last of Us Episode 5 is now streaming on HBO Max.
