The Last of Us Episode 2 Hid Awesome Game Easter Egg in Plain Sight

It has been almost a week yet people keep rewatching The Last of Us Episode 2 in hopes of finding some previously unseen references or Easter Eggs. So it's no surprise that some viewers had to look very closely to find one awesome and adorable Easter Egg from the original Naughty Dog video game.

In The Last of Us Episode 2, Joel and Tess finally bring Ellie outside the Quarantine Zone. As they make their way to the State House, the ground is littered with dirt and trash and one sadly discarded giraffe plush toy is just barely visible among the debris.

That's not just a random item on the ground. As a Reddit post confirms, the giraffe has shown up all over the original game and one user calls it "the Tickle-Me-Elmo of the LOU universe." Needless to say, it was obviously placed there for eagle-eyed fans to see.

The Last of Us Episode 2 understandably had a lot of major references to the original game but it also had a subtle Easter Egg from a different Naughty Dog title. The lighter Tess uses to blow up the building filled with the Infected was modeled after Sam Drake's lighter from Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. However, most people missed it because of the tense circumstances of the scene.

The second episode of The Last of Us has been a huge success for HBO, bringing in an astounding 5.7 million viewers across HBO and linear telecasts in the US. This brings the viewership up 22% from the premiere and adds one million viewers compared to Episode 1. HBO also points out that this is the “largest Week 2 audience growth for an HBO Original drama series in the history of the network.”

The Last of Us Episode 2 is titled Infected and is now streaming on HBO Max. The third episode is titled Long Long Time and will finally introduce Bill and Frank. Episode 3 will premiere on HBO on Sunday, January 29, 2023.
