The Last of Us 2 Gets Major Reference in HBO Show's Premiere Episode

The Last of Us Episode 1 is finally out and fans were not disappointed with the way the HBO series has adapted the video game's story. After all, the first episode had numerous Easter Eggs from the Naughty Game title and the biggest yet most subtle reference was actually to The Last of Us 2.

In The Last of Us Episode 1, we get to see Joel's life before the zombie apocalypse. The story is shown from his daughter Sarah's point of view and viewers got to watch how the girl prepared for her father's birthday. After presenting him with his newly fixed watch, Sarah shows him a DVD of Curtis and Viper 2 that she borrowed from the Adlers so they could watch it together.

It's pretty hard to miss and even the official Naughty Dog Twitter account made sure fans noticed the awesome reference.

In The Last of Us 2, Ellie mentions that she wants to invite Joel to watch a movie with her. The film of choice? Curtis and Viper 2.

We're loving the reference to The Last of Us 2 and it could be a tease that we'll get to see Ellie try to watch Curtis and Viper 2 will Joel sometime in the future of the HBO series. In the meantime, it's great (and heartbreaking) to see how closely the show is keeping up with video game.

The Last of Us Episode 1 is titled When You're Lost in the Darkness and it spanned 55 years starting from an opening scene set in 1968. The episode also shows what is happening to Joel in the present day as he tries to live in a post-apocalyptic world where people have been infected by fungi that turns them into violent creatures.

The first episode of The Last of Us is now streaming on HBO Max.
