The Last of Us: Bella Ramsey Hits Back at Initial Backlash to Ellie Casting

There is little doubt that people were thrilled when Bella Ramsey was cast as Ellie in the live-action series adaptation of The Last of Us. After all, the young actor did an excellent job at playing the feisty Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones. However, not everyone was happy about the casting and Ramsey has spoken up about the initial backlash to her new role.

It's no secret that the producers wanted Bella Ramsey to audition for the role of Ellie after seeing her performance in Game of Thrones and she was immediately cast for the role soon after trying out. However, there was some resistance to the casting as some people claim that Ramsey wasn't right for the role. Still, the cast and crew have defended the young actor, even going as far as claiming that she is "the best Ellie."

But how did Bella Ramsey feel about the backlash? The Catherine Called Birdy star recently spoke to The New York Times where she finally addressed the hateful comments about her casting.

"It’s the first time I’ve ever had a negative reaction to something. There would be times I’d find it funny. Then I’d get to the end of a 10-minute scrolling session, put my phone down and realize: Maybe that was a bad idea," Ramsey said. She then pointed out that she is still working on accepting the role she plays.

"It’s only recently that I’ve accepted I am Ellie, and I can do it, and I am a good actor, but this will last for a few weeks and then I’ll think I’m terrible again. That’s just the process," Ramsey said.

It's sad to know that Bella Ramsey had to face backlash despite being personally picked by the Last of Us producers. Needless to say, we're looking forward to her performance as Ellie blowing everyone away later this weekend.

The Last of Us premieres on HBO on January 15, 2023.
