From the start of the journey of the team, everyone's favorite tree has been an integral part of it that he easily became one of the most famous. As many fans noticed in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, he looks different and James Gunn reiterates Swoll Groot is a separate being from the OG Groot.

When Groot first made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, he touched everyone's hearts when he saved them from Ronan the Accuser, even costing his life. Thankfully, Rocket plants a twig, thus, baby Groot is born, and now, in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, he's now called Swoll Groot.

Everything about Swoll Groot or Young Adult Groot is different from the OG Groot and the fans noticed that the new Groot is much more buff and broader than the first one. This sparked again the debate and James Gunn settles it once and for all.

In two separate tweets, James Gunn first described the new Groot's physique to be different to his father, "Well, YA Groot, or Swoll Groot, as we call him, is getting bigger, outward as well as upward. As you can see by now he has a different, stockier physiology (and a more outgoing personality) than his father did."

In another tweet, as a response to a now deleted tweet, James Gunn reiterated, "He’s much broader than OG Groot ever was. He’s his progeny & a totally different Groot."

After Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, everyone witnessed the growth of the new Groot, from when he was planted in a pot, even having his own mini-series, I Am Groot, to his teenage years in Infinity War, to his return in Endgame following the blip caused by Hulk, and now, in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, he's quite grown up, and muscular, too.

This brings into the question on how old is Groot, really. He was re-planted in 2014, that's a given. In Infinity War which happened in 2018, he's around 4 years old, but surely, years run different to trees. Considering he was blipped, he came back the same age in Endgame in year 2023.

Looking at the timeline of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, the year is possibly 2025 since the Marvel Special Presentation is around the same time as that of Thor: Love and Thunder. That brings Groot's age to just around 6 years old.

Assuming that age in trees are different than that of humans, it's safe to say that Groot is now a young adult based on his physical appearance but his love for games will never die as seen in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is now available to stream on Disney Plus.
