We've already seen a glimpse of Robert Pattinson's upcoming take on arguably DC Comics' flagship superhero in Matt Reeves' The Batman and so far, the response has been generally favorable and people are eager to see this new version of the caped crusader. And staying true to their promise, it looks like the film will in fact be different from its predecessors with Reeves seemingly given the creative freedom to do whatever he wants.

As it stands, The Batman is already set to feature at least three villains — The Penguin, Catwoman, and The Riddler who will all wreak havoc in Gotham City. Shockingly enough, despite the fact that the project already feels a little too overcrowded with baddies, the film will also be tweaking the story a bit and will portray the unlikeliest of characters as the villains.

According to a scoop from insider Grace Randolph, The Batman will still follow the iconic storyline about Thomas and Martha Wayne being murdered but there's a twist, the Waynes will be portrayed as an evil family that could potentially be tied to Gotham's criminal organizations.

It may come as a huge shock to a lot of fans but the film is obviously drawing some inspiration from Batman: The Telltale Series games where Thomas Wayne is depicted as the main antagonist. The real question is does Bruce already have an idea of his family's criminal background? In the comics, we all know that he became the Dark Knight to avenge the death of his parents who were killed at Crime Ally. In the film, it'll be interesting to see whether or not he knows what's been going on the entire time.

The Batman is scheduled for release in 2022.
