Lucasfilm has pulled the plug on The Acolyte as they have officially decided that the series will not return for season 2.
Since the first season finale aired last month, fans have wondered whether the High Republic-set Star Wars series will be renewed for a second season and continue telling more stories with the surviving characters.
However, there have been rumors that the series' future has been uncertain following the polarizing response to the first season and its underwhelming viewership in the subsequent weeks after the premiere.
The Acolyte is Not Returning for Season 2
Reports have confirmed that The Acolyte will not return for season 2 as Lucasfilm opted not to proceed with another installment of the series.
Despite getting promising viewership during its premiere week, the numbers subsequently declined in the following weeks and it dropped out of Nielsen's Top 10 after its third week.
The series has also been a target of review-bombing from trolls and it became a subject of hate attacks online with accusations of being "woke" due to its diverse main characters and perceived changes to the long-standing mythology of the franchise.
The now-series finale of the series notably ended with cliffhangers as it showed Osha and Qimir joining forces, Yoda's debut that sets up a future storyline, and the arrival of Darth Plagueis as the potential big threat in the second season.
Unfortunately for fans, none of those cliffhangers will be resolved anymore despite showrunner Leslye Headland's ambitious plans for the second season and the recent announcements regarding Lucasfilm's publishing plans for the series.
Whether there are plans to continue some of the characters' journey in a spinoff series or novels remains to be seen, but it is disappointing for fans that it won't be getting a chance to expand its story and explore more of its lore.
