A new report laid out the details of what led to the abrupt cancellation of The Acolyte a month after it aired its finale.
Last week, fans learned the unfortunate news that the High Republic-set Star Wars series will not be moving forward with a second season. It was met with a disappointing response from many fans online.
Since then, there have been questions on what made Lucasfilm decide to pull the plug on the series and whether it will remain on the Disney+ platform in the meantime.
New Report Explains the Decision Behind The Acolyte's Cancellation
Veteran reporter Jeff Sneider shared the details in a newsletter on what led to the abrupt cancellation of The Acolyte.
He explained that, according to insiders, Lucasfilm decided to pull the plug on the series due to "bad" viewership and there is nothing else besides that.
While the series had promising viewership numbers in its premiere, it declined significantly in the weeks after.
In the case of Andor, while it also has a small viewership, it steadily climbed throughout the first season. It helps that it received massive critical acclaim.
"You can blame Lucasfilm for a lot of things, but not this one. If more people watched it, then it would have been renewed," a source cited in the report said.
Fortunately, Disney+ has no plans at all to remove it from the platform so fans can rewatch it anytime while subscribers who have not seen the series can still give it a shot.
If this is indeed the official reason behind the cancellation, it sounds like a typical situation that TV shows face when their viewership doesn't reach the heights that the network/streamer might expect.
Despite that, a lot of fans are still actively campaigning for Lucasfilm to reverse their decision and it would be interesting whether they will respond to the petition.
