The Acolyte episode 4 sees the Jedi get together to look for Osha's twin, Mae, and stop her before she and her accomplice, Qimir, can reach the next victim on her kill list, Wookie Jedi Kelnacca.

Upon landing on the jungle planet and with Bazil leading the way, Osha notices a number of flying bug-like creatures wrapped around the trees.

Bazil had already warned the crew about "something dark here", as Yord Fandar translated. Sol added that they don't know exactly "what lives out here", which means they must refrain from touching or interacting with anything they don't recognize.

However, Osha casually touches some of the bugs, which causes one to suddenly leap into flight, much to the horror of at-home viewers.

At the last minute, Sol manages to get his lightsaber out and slashes the unknown creature clean in half. Though the creature seems to leave the crew alone after that, these scenes stuck with fans.

So, what was the flying bug that Sol killed in The Acolyte episode 4? Have we seen it in the Lucasfilm franchise before?

Is This Giant Bug New to the Star Wars Franchise?

Keep in mind that giant or creepy mysterious creatures are not a strange sight in the galaxy far, far away. However, the type of giant, flying bug Sol killed is a new species in the Star Wars universe, called an umbramoth, according to Disney+ subtitles.

They are large moths found in the jungle planet Khofar, and The Acolyte served as the species' debut in the Star Wars critterverse.

When Osha touched one of the umbramoths, she unknowingly set into motion a chain of events that eventually led her deeper on the Jedi path. Once awakened, the moth started attacking the group, which prompted Master Sol to slash it in half with his lightsaber, as the flying bug was attracted to the brightly glowing sword.

This moment paved the way for Osha and Jecki to grow closer and bond about the meaning of being a true Jedi.

While Osha believes she should have been able to accept the moth's death more easily, Jecki offers her the followingwords of wisdom: "We're not defined by what we lose. We're defined by what we survive."
