Star Wars The Acolyte showcased to their fans what the High Republic looked like years before the Battle of Yavin, where everyone saw Luke Skywalker destroy the Death Star.

Besides letting everyone see the Jedi at their peak, the new TV show also displayed several tidbits about the Jedi, such as force usage and lightsabers.

Yord, Osha’s friend and fellow Jedi, surprisingly wields a yellow lightsaber, a rarity in the Star Wars universe. Rey Skywalker is one of the other few wielders of this saber colour. But what does a yellow lightsaber exactly mean?

Yellow lightsabers are less common than the familiar green, blue, and red and hold a special place in the Star Wars franchise. They are canonically associated with the Jedi Temple Guards, who are entrusted with protecting the Jedi Temple in Coruscant.

These anonymous Jedi, known as sentinels, were required to maintain emotional detachment, a crucial aspect of their devotion to the Jedi Order's security. This unique requirement adds a layer of complexity to the Jedi Temple Guard's role.

In The Acolyte, it would seem that Yord was also tasked with becoming part of the Jedi Temple Guard as part of his knighthood.

Also shown wielding a stun gun in Episode 2, Yord displayed various skills, such as tracking, which he used to track the freelancing Osha while doing his investigation in the Episode 1 premiere, and spying skills, where he displayed his cunning observation of Osha during Episode 2 when Mae killed Master Torbin using a bunta poison.

All these traits came from his past as a Temple Guard, who also used different skills and abilities and did not limit themselves only to the Force to provide the highest form of security for the Order during the High Republic.

While this may be true for Yord, Rey Skywalker also has a yellow lightsaber, albeit not part of the Jedi Temple Guard. Luke Skywalker wielded a yellow saber shortly after his duel against his father, Darth Vader. The young Luke discovered this saber in an abandoned temple on Tempes, making him one of the few yellow saber wielders in the galaxy.

Kyber crystals, the crystals inside the lightsabers, are semi-sentient and can recognise the wielder’s nature.

In the game Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, Cal Kestis created his lightsaber, similar to how Rey did in the movies. Padawans also did this on Ilum as part of their training.

How Are Lightsaber Colours Chosen?

The process of attuning themselves to the crystals usually gives the crystal colour, which is initially colourless. Rey’s attunement to the Force and her will to balance it and continue the Skywalker legacy gave her saber the bright yellow colour. Rey’s yellow saber and the Jedi Temple Guards’ saber are similar in balancing duty with the will to protect and secure the Jedi legacy.

Despite being an uncommon saber colour in past Star Wars media, fans will now witness more of these bright amber sabers as we learn more about the Acolyte, the High Republic, and the prime Jedi Order.
