You would think an intimacy coordinator was already on board given the amount of love scenes the STARZ time travel drama packs, but apparently, it was the first time the series did so, and just in time for Outlander Season 6 Episode 2's "unusual" scene involving Fergus (César Domboy) and Marsali (Lauren Lyle).

Fergus and Marsali Get Intimate in Outlander Season 6, Episode 2

In Season 6 Episode 2, Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) took a back seat in terms of steamy scenes, allowing Fergus (César Domboy) and Marsali (Lauren Lyle) to take center stage.

The sequence, which was ripped straight from Diana Gabaldon's sixth book A Breath of Snow and Ashes, was the first time Outlander readers saw the two become intimate despite the fact that they have a lot of children. The fact that it all happened when Marsali was in labor drew the attention of the audience.

When Fergus returns, he begins fondling and sucking on his wife's breasts in such a passionate manner that midwife Claire knows it's time to excuse herself into another room. But before she goes, Fergus tells her that he's assisting Marsali because the stimulation can help move the labor along and lessen suffering.

Outlander Season 6 Hired an Intimacy Coordinator to Help Out With the Most ‘Unusual’ Love Scene in the Show’s History

The majority of the intimacy in the sequence was conveyed by the reactions of family members in the adjacent room. However, the scenes that viewers did witness were exceedingly sensitive, and the performers needed Vanessa Coffey's assistance.

“It is quite an unusual scene given its content, but really at the end of the day it is about having those conversations with the actors about ‘what is this moment of storytelling, what are we trying to say here,’ and how do we physically go about telling that story being really true to the physicality of those characters,” Coffey told Digital Spy.’

What On Earth is an Intimacy Coordinator?

Choreographing a love scene, preparing the level of nudity an actor is comfortable with and even working with costume departments on clothing to preserve an actor's modesty or prosthetics, such as artificial breasts and penis, are all part of an intimacy coordinator's job.

Outlander now has its own intimacy coordinator, thanks to Heughan's suggestion, who joined the cast for the sixth season's production.

Outlander Season 6 is now streaming on STARZ.
