According to actor Toheeb Jimoh, Sam's backstory will be more fully explored in Ted Lasso Season 3.
Sam initially struggles with his position on the team, as well as with club superstar Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster), a position move to right winger, and a goal-scoring streak. But after receiving a confidence boost, Sam swiftly rises to the top of the team.
Sam battled with his own personal path as a player, his relationship with his native Nigeria, and his deep connection with Rebecca throughout Seasons 1 and 2 of Ted Lasso.
However, towards the end of Season 2, Sam remained faithful to his club, turning down a lucrative offer to return to Nigeria and play for a billionaire's team while investing in a local property for a future company as a Nigerian restaurant.

Jimoh offered plot insights regarding his role in Ted Lasso Season 3 at the Ted Lasso For Your Consideration event in Beverly Hills (via THR).
When asked if the upcoming season will be the series' final season, the star couldn't tell for sure, but he did hint at what Sam would be up to when the show returned.
“...we’re going to see a lot more of what his [Sam] motivations are in his relationships with his family. Stuff is coming [with the restaurant]. He does open it and he does set it up,” the actor shared.
“There’s an interesting story about what happens there. I feel like it’s really important because that restaurant becomes his way of laying down roots in London.”
Jimoh seemed to have disclosed a lot about Sam's character growth in Ted Lasso Season 3 with such a seemingly little inquiry. Sam has reportedly developed a love for London and now considers it to be his new home outside of Nigeria.
The actor reveals that Sam's story would be connected to his experience as a British immigrant from Nigeria. Sam's connection with his parents and even his extended family will be further explored in this, most likely.

Watch Ted Lasso Season 3 on Apple TV+
Based on a character created for a set of NBC Sports commercials promoting their Premier League coverage, the Apple TV+ show follows Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) as he excitedly accepts the job of managing an English football team despite having no prior experience with the sport.
Although Jimoh offered elements about Sam's overarching story, he did not reveal many specifics. His emphasis on Sam's family rather than the character's contribution to the team's Premier League adventure or love for Rebecca is instructive, since Sam's relationship with his family and the development of his business may be a major focus for him throughout the season.
Viewers will have to wait until Ted Lasso Season 3 episodes are released on Apple TV+ to learn how Sam's narrative unfolds.
