Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto is a noted cinephile, as many of his works feature cinematic references. So, it comes as no surprise that Fujimoto’s favorite movie of 2022 is Jordan Peele’s latest sci-fi horror film.

It’s fair to say that Fujimoto is one of the most popular manga artists working today. This is thanks in large part to his serialized shonen works, Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch. Though he is also acclaimed for his great one-shots.

While his manga are varied in terms of story and subject matter, a common thread that ties them together is the “cinematic” quality of his works, as noted by many fans.

Specifically, most of his works are said to feel and flow like a movie instead of a typical manga series.

For instance, while some series tend to dump lots of exposition, Fujimoto instead opts to show what’s happening with minimal non-dialogue explanation.

Aside from their style, Fujimoto’s works are also peppered with movie references.

Because of this, Fujimoto has often been asked about the movies that have inspired his work.

While he has not directly stated how they inspired him, Fujimoto has mentioned lots of movies in interviews over the years.

For instance, he has talked about films like Hereditary, Parasite, Pulp Fiction, Get Out, and other acclaimed movies over the past years.

For many critics and cinephiles, Nope is one of the best films of 2022. Aside from the impressive cinematography and performances, the film also tackles themes about how artists are exploited in the name of spectacle.

Given that the film tackles ideas related to filmmaking and spectacle, it comes as no surprise that Fujimoto is a big fan of the movie, enough that he considers it the most interesting film of 2022.

Nope being his top movie of the past year also makes sense in the context of his favorite films.

After all, Fujimoto seems to be a big fan of modern movies that aren’t your typical blockbusters.

But the Chainsaw Man creator is not alone in his appreciation for Nope.

Notable game director Hideo Kojima also included Nope in his best films of 2022 list. He even had a podcast episode featuring Jordan Peele.
