Given that Shinkai’s Your Name became one of Japan’s highest-grossing films of all time, there was a lot of hype behind Suzume no Tojimari.

Upon release, it delivered on the hype as it earned JPY 1.88 billion (USD 13.49 million) in its first three days in cinemas.

Thanks to this box office haul, Suzume no Tojimari has broken Weathering With You’s three-day record, making it the biggest opening ever for a Makoto Shinkai movie.

For comparison, Weathering With You earned JPY 1.6 billion in its first three days.

Currently, the film is still screening in Japanese cinemas, and there’s no word yet on when it will be released in other countries. Though it is confirmed to get a cinema release outside Japan.

Just a few days ago, it was revealed via the film’s official Twitter account that Suzume no Tojimari will be distributed in 199 countries and regions around the world.

The announcement also means that Suzume no Tojimari will have the widest worldwide distribution for a Makoto Shinkai movie.

This goes to show just how popular Shinkai’s films are all over the world.
