Star Wars: Taika Waititi Claims to be Working on Jar Jar Binks Story

We already know that Taika Waititi is working on a Star Wars movie. But what exactly is the project all about? The Thor: Love and Thunder director couldn't help but tease fans by claiming that his film is going to be about the iconic prequel trilogy character Jar Jar Binks!

It's no secret that Taika Waititi has been tapped to helm a new Star Wars movie after he worked on an episode of The Mandalorian. Needless to say, Waititi's project has been the subject of fan speculation although details have not yet been revealed.

But what are the chances that Waititi's Star Wars film will ruin the franchise? That's a question that the filmmaker was asked when he was a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Waititi had a fitting response.

"No, I’m not [going to ruin Star Wars]. No, I’m not," Waititi told the host. "What if I was like, yeah, I’m going to give you the Jar Jar Binks story."

Although we'd love to take this comment seriously, it's important to remember that Waititi is joking about his plans. Still, it would be interesting to see a project centering on Jar Jar Binks, who was played by Ahmed Best in the Star Wars prequel film trilogy.

Waititi had previously confirmed that his movie is still in early development.

"That's yet to be seen. I don't know. I'm still writing," Waititi said. "I'm still coming up with the ideas and storylining it and just wanted to make sure that it feels like a Star Wars film."

He continued, "Because, I could say, 'Oh yeah, we'll just write any old thing and set in space and then put Star Wars on the front.' But it wouldn't be a Star Wars film without certain elements and a certain treatment, so I've just got to make sure that it stays within that wheelhouse."

Waititi's latest project Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on July 8, 2022.
