There is little doubt that people are expecting some romance in Thor: Love and Thunder because of the film's title and the return of an ex-flame. However, it looks like love will blossom in the most unusual place. Director Taika Waititi has confirmed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel will "run head first into the romance" but we won't expect which characters will be falling in love!
Taika Waititi recently took part in an interview with Fandango where the cast spoke about the couples they ship. The filmmaker himself had a lot to say about what to expect in the MCU film.
"It's a romance, a romantic comedy, it's a romantic tragedy, it's a dramedy," Waititi said. "When we first came up with the ideas for this, the one thing I had in my mind, the picture I had in my mind was sort of Mills & Boon cover of like a romantic book. I want it to feel like that."
"Melodrama, over the--and to run head first into the romance, into the love aspect of it, and not shy away from it which I can tend to do in my films as New Zealander who's cynical and hates everything," he continued. "But I was like, 'No, I'm going to commit to this. And I will make sure this satisfies people, satisfies audiences with the romance."
Interestingly, Waititi then dropped a coy tease. "And I'm not just talking about the romance you're all assuming I'm talking about!" he said.
This is an interesting thought considering that people are already expecting Thor to make up with Jane Foster, or Jane could hook up with Valkyrie instead. Perhaps fans should think outside the box or just expect a truly mind-blowing romance this July.
Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on July 8, 2022.
