One of the upcoming Star Wars movies that is currently in the works is the untitled new Rey Skywalker movie. Daisy Ridley is set to reprise the role in a story that will take place around 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

So far, the majority of the plot details are currently under wraps but we know that Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is attached to direct the film while Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is writing the screenplay.

There have been rumors that the film is set to begin production this year, but Lucasfilm has not confirmed the details yet. Considering that it is slated to release in the early summer of 2026, a production start this year is likely to happen.

In an interview with CNN in celebration of New Year's Day, Obaid-Chinoy briefly discussed the recent update on her upcoming Star Wars movie.

She shared her excitement about the project as she claimed that the movie will be "very special" and the spotlight on a female character as the main hero of the story.

"You know, I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special. And we’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away," the Oscar winner said.

While she didn't reveal any details about the script or the production schedule, it is still an exciting update since it is an assurance that they are still working on the project and the enthusiasm of Obaid-Chinoy shows that she remains committed to making it happen.

There is a strong likelihood that we will hear the next major update on the project within this year as Lucasfilm is working hard to make their theatrical projects happen, especially now that Dave Filoni is also involved as the Chief Creative Officer of the studio.

The untitled Daisy Ridley-led new Star Wars movie is slated for release in theaters on May 22, 2026.
