Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi Writer Defends Luke Fake-Out in Favor of Leia

Obi-Wan Kenobi has surprised fans in the most interesting ways so far. For instance, people who were expecting to see a lot of Luke Skywalker were pleasantly shocked when the Star Wars series put the focus on his twin sister Leia Organa. But why lead viewers astray? Writer Joby Harold defended the decision to shine the spotlight on Leia instead of her brother.

Joby Harold recently spoke to IndieWire about working on Obi-Wan Kenobi and he was quick to point out that Leia was meant to be the focus right from the start.

"[Lucasfilm] hid the football on that and rightly so, that made it quite a fun thing to watch," he said. "Leia was always a part of the conversation, I believe right from the beginning. What would be important enough to have Obi-Wan leave Luke? I couldn’t think of anything beyond her."

Harold continued, "I think that conversation had begun a long time ago, and rightly so because she and Luke have equal importance within the bigger conversation. Why not bring that conversation right up front into this show and challenge Obi-Wan with that reality?"

"She’s important. She’s as important, so that makes it quite dramatic and interesting as a call to action," he concluded.

We're loving the idea that Leia was always meant to be the focus in Obi-Wan Kenobi although people were expecting to see more of Luke in the show. However, that doesn't mean her brother has been completely forgotten. Hopefully, we'll get to see more of Luke in the upcoming episodes.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is currently on its fourth episode and it looks like the show will continue to follow Leia's story in Episode 5. The upcoming episode is simply titled Part V and will be the show's penultimate episode. It is set to premiere on Disney+ on June 15, 2022.
