Star Trek Actor Casts Doubt on the Movie Franchise's Future

While the Star Trek franchise has been a success on Paramount+ at the moment, its future on the movie side has been a huge question mark as Paramount Pictures is still figuring out what to do with the untitled Star Trek 4 film that was supposed to be coming on its way.

The project hit a huge road bump a few months ago when director Matt Shakman exited in favor of helming Fantastic Four instead. There have also been rumors recently that J.J. Abrams will return to direct although neither Bad Robot nor Paramount has made any confirmations about it.

With all the uncertainties that are happening, a lot of fans have been wondering whether Star Trek 4 will still go on and if it does, will the Kelvin timeline cast still remain which is what the studio promised when they made the announcement a year ago.

As reported by SlashFilm, in a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Jonathan Frakes, who plays William Riker and has also helmed episodes and films within the franchise, discussed his thoughts about the movie franchise's uncertain future where he casts doubt that the fourth film might still happen.

"Movies are tough! Even J.J. [Abrams] can't get this fourth movie off the ground. All those wonderful rumors? Noah Hawley was attached to a Star Trek movie, and Quentin [Tarantino] was toying with people's emotions about doing a movie. If those two names can't get a f****** movie made, I don't know. TV is the future, it seems to me," he said.

Given the lack of encouraging updates regarding the supposed fourth film, it is not surprising to hear Frakes' doubts about its future and even fans themselves can admit that they are losing hope that it will still happen at all since there's no news about its progress ever since Shakman exited.

Since Paramount has not made any announcements regarding its progress or cancellation, all we can say for now is that it will still happen at some point. However, as Frakes also pointed out, it sounds like all the focus right now is on the streaming shows that are airing on Paramount+.
