There is no doubt Squid Game’s success remains to be prominent in the golden age of television as it is not only a unique plot-driven series, but also has a compelling story to tell to its viewers on gambling with life for money. Although fans of the show are rooting for a Season 2 based on the first season’s cliffhanger, Squid Game star, Lee Jung-Jae, who plays Seong Gi-Hun, shares his insight on why the show’s success is ‘terrible.’
Speaking with The Guardian, Lee makes it clear that while he is happy he got to take part in such a globally known series, he could not help but share that the themes of the show reflect the world all too accurately. Read his full comment below:
“I’m happy about it, of course, but it’s bittersweet. Yes, it’s great that audiences are consuming Korean content around the world. And they appreciate it. But if you think about the themes of Squid Game — how far are we willing to go to accumulate personal wealth, the lengths people are forced to go to — the fact it resonated with so many around the world is worrying. You get a sense this is the reality for so many people globally. And that makes me feel hugely sad.”
The actor continues to share his sentiments on how ‘horrific’ the sets were, no matter how childish and playful they may seem to the audience. In fact, Lee has reflected about its message in more ways than one, making him rethink how he views the world on his own. As an actor himself, the very roles they take, the characters they portray on screen, would more likely take a toll on developing their perspectives, so it is no surprise that his resolve on the show is similar to Gi-Hun’s, as well.
“We had to express the experiences of these characters being pushed to those extremes. Doing that? It was terrible. The more beautiful the game set was, and the more childish and fun it seemed, the more horrific it was for the characters, and therefore us as actors. I do think about what happened in that show. It’s impossible not to. And it made me think about what I’m not doing. Many of us live obliviously. It made me rethink how I look at the world. It couldn’t not.”
