There is little doubt that Squid Game had numerous casualties considering that the game contestants needed to kill each other to win. However, the most heartbreaking death in the South Korean series (so far) has been Kang Sae-byeok since the young woman actually made it to the finals. However, it looks like there was one person who actually enjoyed the scene. Jung Ho-yeon claims she was "so happy" while working on the unforgettable sequence in the Netflix show!
Jung Ho-yeon made her acting debut as Kang Sae-byeok aka Player 067 in Squid Game, a role that would eventually make her the SAG Winner for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.
Playing Sae-byeok was understandably tough and while talking to Sandra Oh for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Jung admitted to being relieved that she could finally let go of the character.
"Maybe it's weird to say it, but while I'm shooting my death scene, I was so happy" she said. "It was the most comfortable scene I ever had. … It's because I've been living with my character over a few months, and then there is a time that I have to let her go, and I kind of feel like I can happily let her go, because I can understand."
Jung continued, "Maybe not fully, but I'm the one who can understand her most in this world, so I know her stress, and I know how her life was [such a] struggle and hard. So it wasn't that bad or sad."
It's interesting to know just how much Jung empathized with Sae-byeok as the character was notably one of the most tragic ones in Squid Game. Still, it was an amazing performance and we're expecting to see Jung in more projects in the future.
Sae-byeok's death should mean that the character will not return for Squid Game Season 2. However, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had previously joked that Jung could still appear in the second season, this time as a possible twin sister.
Squid Game Season 2 has not yet been given an official release date. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
