A few weeks ago, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced that they are introducing a special informal category for the upcoming 94th Academy Awards called "#OscarsFanFavorite" where the general public will have a chance to vote for their favorite films of 2021 on Twitter. The race is currently heating up as fans are rallying up to have their favorites lead the race. Now, we know the films that are currently leading the leaderboard.
The Academy recently announced on social media the ten films that are currently leading the number of votes for the "#OscarsFanFavorite" category. The films that are part of the leaderboard are Army of the Dead, Cinderella, Dune, Malignant, Minamata, The Power of the Dog, Sing 2, Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Suicide Squad, and Tick, Tick... Boom!. Voting is still currently underway and it is expected to close by tomorrow.

It is expected that films like Dune, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and The Suicide Squad will be on the leaderboard since they were some of the hit mainstreams films from last year and it's not really surprising that they would get a lot of votes here as well. It's also impressive that The Power of the Dog and Tick, Tick... Boom! are here which shows that they have a lot of support even though they are not necessarily favorites by the general audience.
However, the highlight here is the inclusion of Cinderella (which is reportedly leading the race), Army of the Dead, and Minamata. It shows that while they weren't necessarily a hit to the critics or the audience, they have a large fanbase online that would help them carry their way to the race. It is obvious that the special category was only made so that Spider-Man: No Way Home will have another recognition, but there's a chance that it might not actually happen. We only have a day left before voting closes and it's interesting to see which film will end up prevailing.
