Spider-Man: No Way Home, Shang-Chi Leads 2022 Critics Choice Super Awards Nominations


The Critics Choice Association (CCA) has announced the nominations for the 2nd Annual Critics Choice Super Awards where they honor the best in film and television in genres such as superhero, science-fiction/fantasy, horror, and action from last year. As expected, Marvel and DC films and TV shows dominated the list with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: No Way Home leading the nominations on the film side with five each.

The Best Superhero Movie category has films such as Black Widow, Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Suicide Squad, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League competing for the prize.

For the Best Actor in a Superhero Movie category, John Cena and Idris Elba (The Suicide Squad), Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man: No Way Home), and Simu Liu and Tony Leung (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) ended up making the list while Best Actress has Gal Gadot (Zack Snyder's Justice League), Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh (Black Widow), Margot Robbie (The Suicide Squad), Michelle Yeoh (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), and Zendaya (Spider-Man: No Way Home). Leung and Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man: No Way Home) are also nominated in Best Villain along with other film performances.

On the television side, Doom Patrol, Hawkeye, Loki, Lucifer, Superman & Lois, and WandaVision are competing for the Best Superhero Series prize. For Best Actor, the nominees are consist of Paul Bettany (WandaVision), Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Brendan Fraser (Doom Patrol), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Tyler Hoechlin (Superman & Lois), and Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) while Best Actress has Sophia Di Martino and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Loki), Kathryn Hahn and Elizabeth Olsen (WandaVision), Javicia Leslie (Batwoman), and Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye) making up the list. Hahn, Vincent D'Onofrio (Hawkeye), and Jonathan Majors (Loki) are also nominated for Best Villain.

In the science-fiction/fantasy categories, films like Dune, Don’t Look Up, Free Guy, The Green Knight, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, and Swan Song are competing for the top prize with some of its stars also nominated in their respective categories while, in the television side, Foundation, Resident Alien, Snowpiercer, Star Trek: Discovery, Station Eleven, and The Witcher are also nominated in its top prize as well as some of their stars.

It is great to see these films and TV shows that we love last year getting nominated for an awards ceremony that celebrates genre storytelling, especially since they don't usually get recognition by the major awards. We can all agree that a lot of these films, TV shows, and actors deserve their nominations and it's also going to be a tough competition for sure. The voters will definitely have a hard time choosing who they will vote for since a lot of them deserve to win. Let's just wait and see which of them will end up prevailing.

The winners of the 2nd Annual Critics Choice Super Awards will be announced on March 17.
