Spider-Man: No Way Home May Get Oscar Recognition Thanks to New Fan Favorite Category

There were some fans who got disappointed when Spider-Man: No Way Home didn't earn an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. While it did receive a Best Visual Effects nomination (although let's face it, that award might go to Dune), a lot were hoping that it will get a nod for the top prize given that it was the biggest movie of 2021. Now, it looks like the film might get another chance for Oscar recognition thanks to a new category.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, movie fans now have a chance to participate at the upcoming 94th Academy Awards as they can now vote for their favorite films that were released in 2021 (regardless of if the film was nominated) on Twitter using the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite. The film that received the most votes by March 3 will be the winner of the informal category which will be announced during the ceremony on March 27.

In addition, three Twitter users who cast their votes during the voting period will be selected (along with their guests) to have an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles to present an Oscar award at the following ceremony in 2023.

Besides the fan-favorite category, fans can also vote for their favorite scene from a 2021 film using the hashtag #OscarsCheerMoment. The winning scenes will be shown at the ceremony. Five Twitter users will be selected to receive prizes that include a full year of free movie tickets, subscriptions to streaming services, and exclusive items from the Academy Museum store.

The #OscarsFanFavorite category was obviously created in order for them to engage with the general movie audience and it's a chance for them to give some sort of recognition to a populist film. Let's just see if this will result in millions of engagements although the main challenge here is that there might be bot users who would be casting the votes which might question the entire process.

This would be the best chance for Spider-Man: No Way Home to get Oscar recognition since it was the highest-grossing film of 2021 and the most highly-rated film from the audience based on scores and ratings so we can assume at this point that it might end up as the winner of the category. There's also a possibility that other films such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, House of Gucci, Red Notice, No Time to Die, Eternals, F9, or Venom: Let There Be Carnage will end up prevailing since they also have a lot of support from the general moviegoers.

It is interesting to see where this informal category will go and if the entire idea will be a success that the Academy decides to make it annual. If you want to cast your vote and make sure that your favorite 2021 film will win, go on Twitter now using the hashtag. Who knows, you might end up winning the prize as well.
