Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Producers Tease Oscar Isaac's Antagonistic Role as Spider-Man 2099

There is little doubt that people are already excited about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as we're set to see A LOT of Spider-People in the highly anticipated sequel. However, at least one Spider-Person is set to be antagonistic towards Miles Morales. Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller confirm that Spider-Man 2099 will be going after Miles but Oscar Isaac's character isn't exactly the bad guy.

We already saw Spider-Man 2099 in the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse end-credits scene but he is set to play a larger role in the sequel. But instead of being a good friend to Miles because of their similarities, Miller says Miguel will somehow antagonize the boy.

"He's not the villain of the movie, but he's sort of an antagonist to Miles because they both think that what they're doing is the right thing," Miller told Entertainment Weekly.

This shouldn't be a huge surprise considering that we already saw Spider-Man 2099 attack Miles in the first teaser for Across the Spider-Verse. In addition to that, comic book fans are well aware of how Miguel has a certain dislike for other Spider-People and is rather protective of his own universe. We're just hoping he eventually realizes that Miles isn't the real enemy.

Speaking of enemies, Lord and Miller also spoke about the Spot, who is set to be the main villain in the sequel. However, the co-screenwriters pointed out that the character has reasonable motivation for his actions.

"I like the villains best when they reflect the journeys of the hero — sort of a dark mirror of the protagonist," Lord said. "And I think Spot's no different. He wants to be seen as legitimate. He's a character that has a silly costume and is not always seen as the top tier of Spider-Man foes, but like all of us, he wants to be taken seriously."

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will hit theaters on June 2, 2023.
