While Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ended on a cliffhanger with Miles Morales being trapped on Earth-42, there was still some optimism as they showed that Gwen Stacy recruited other heroes to help Miles while Spot was about to unleash his attack on the multiverse

The ending gave the audience a reason to be excited about the third installment and it is a great set-up of what we can expect when they continue the multiversal story.

However, as it turns out, the film wasn't supposed to end in a hopeful manner and the filmmakers decided to make a last-minute change to the ending to make it more optimistic.

In an interview with Empire Magazine (via Screen Rant), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller and directors Kemp Powers, Joaquim Dos Santos, and Justin K. Thompson revealed that they changed the ending of the film six weeks before its release.

Miller said that they made the decision to give audiences "a little bit more hope that help was on the way."

"I was really worried about [the ending] until about six weeks before we finished the movie, and we added it. The movie kind of fell flat at the end, and was really a bummer," Thompson explained.

"We had a screening and thankfully we were able to come up with the strategy of how to bring all these characters back together, and bring the Spot back - because he didn't come back - and show Rio and Jeff, and tag all these characters."

He added, "And it was awesome to see the old gang back together. This is the right time to bring them back into the movie."

The last-minute ending that they came up with for the film ended up working in everybody's favor since it made the audience excited for the next movie and, as they pointed out, there was a sense of hope that Miles could still be rescued after all thanks to their friends.

It also adds up to the reports that we've been hearing surrounding the film's alleged troubled production with the various revisions that they made throughout and they even changed certain parts after releasing them in theaters.

What's more important in the end is that the audience was able to embrace the ending and, fortunately, that was the case. It is now exciting to see how they'll continue the story in the next film, which will also conclude the trilogy.
