Simu Liu Jokingly Says Spider-Man 'Cheated' to Overthrow Shang-Chi at the Box Office

Tom Holland's Spider-Man: No Way Home is undeniably one of the franchise's triumphs following Infinity Saga's blockbusters Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. However, Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings star Simu Liu believes that the fight was unfair in terms of box office performances.

Simu Liu was present at 2022's Awesome Con, where he was asked by a convention attendee which MCU hero he wants to Shang-Chi to clash with.

"We had such a great run. Shang-Chi came out, we saved cinema, we set a Labor Day box office record." And then Spider-Man came along, "Liu hilariously responded as the crowd laughs. "In my humble opinion, great movie, loved it. I grew up watching [Spider-Man movies], I've seen all of them. But in my opinion, [they] deployed a cheat code and brought back nostalgia all the way [from 20 years ago]."

Liu added, "I would love to have a friendly chat with Spider-Man, I think that would be really fun in the octagon. I get my [ten] rings, though."

Liu also took the opportunity to express interest in a Shang-Chi and Spider-Man crossover, "I just want that for the culture, you know?" I want to see the two of them fighting," the actor concluded.

The 'cheat code' that Liu might have been referring to must be the monumental three-generation reunion of Peter Parkers, including Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and MCU's current web-slinger Tom Holland. Aside from the ensemble trio, Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange was also present in the film. Imagine that?

With that said, No Way Home easily grossed $1.9 billion at the box office and currently sits as the sixth highest-grossing film of all time. The threequel also places Top 3 of the highest-grossing MCU movies worldwide.

Nevertheless, Liu's Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings still broke a record of $94 Million on Labor Day opening weekend, an impressive milestone considering the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most importantly, Shang-Chi earned positive reviews from both critics and fans, which makes the Martial Artist Hero's future in the MCU secured.

Shang-Chi The Legend of Ten Rings and Spider-Man: No Way Home are available to stream on Disney+.
