Following the successful release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings back in 2021, a sequel was reported to be in the works right after with director Destin Daniel Cretton expected to return in the director's chair.
However, since then, we haven't heard any major updates about the development of the sequel as Marvel Studios is more focused on the other projects that they have announced.
There is also the fact that Cretton is also set to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty which might have put the sequel on the back burner for a meanwhile since that project requires a lot of prep given its huge scale.
Now, we finally have an update to the sequel from the star himself and it sounds like we may have to wait a little longer before we'll see it finally happen.
Shang-Chi 2 is Being Pushed Back According to Simu Liu
Simu Liu was recently asked on his Threads account regarding the latest status of the Shang-Chi sequel where he revealed that the film was supposed to follow an upcoming Avengers movie but it was pushed back.
Despite the discouraging update, the actor still advised fans to anticipate on any news and updates regarding the sequel soon.
"Was told it would follow Avengers but that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control. Hope to have more concrete news to share soon," he said in his response.
While it's not an optimistic update that fans might want to hear, the sequel is still happening no matter what and none of it indicates that Marvel Studios is shelving it or delaying it to the next saga instead.
Even if we won't get to see a Shang-Chi solo movie anytime soon, there is a possibility that we will still see the character in one of the upcoming projects that will release in Phase Five.
With Cretton also attached to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, there is also the possibility that Marvel Studios might tap another director to helm the film instead which is why there is a lack of updates on its progress.
As Liu said, we should be hearing more news and updates about this in the coming months as the development is still ongoing.
