What Happened in Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie Episode 1?
It's the first day of Yuu Izumi's second year of high school. Before leaving, Izumi examines himself in the mirror while his mother brushes the back of his hair. Notably, his mother warns him about rocks, cars, and even crows along the way, recognizing how unfortunate his son is.
As a matter of fact, Izumi stumbles upon a rock just 7 seconds after leaving his house, which throws him off balance. Along the way, he is smoked out by a speeding truck, pooped on by an unidentified crow, and falls twice! What a stroke of luck!
Meanwhile, Izumi's lovely girlfriend, Shikimori, is already waiting for him at their meeting spot. Shikimori, as usual, shines with her idol-like features and appeal, making Izumi blush on the spot.
As they go to school, Izumi thinks about how cute her girlfriend is while also stating that Shikimori is not at all cute, much to Shikimori's chagrin. Shikimori saves Izumi from a speeding truck just as they are about to discuss his statement. Shikimori, as usual, transforms from a cute girl to an incredibly cool heroine in front of Izumi.
At school, they learn that they will be classmates again, along with their friends Inuzuka, Neko, and Hachimitsu. During introductions, Izumi again mispronounces his name as "Ijumi," a complete repeat of his freshman year. Even though he is clumsy, Izumi considers himself fortunate to have Shikimori by his side, even if some of his classmates believe they aren't a good match.
In fact, Izumi is so unlucky that an eraser flies across his face, only to be saved by Shikimori again. He apologizes to Shikimori for his unfortunate luck as he cleans off the eraser's dust on top of her hair, much to Shikimori's embarrassment.
Shikimori then excuses herself to use the restroom, while some of the boys in the class complain about how boring Izumi is to have a cute girlfriend like Shikimori.
Shikimori, upon coming back to the classroom, heard everything and decided to pull Izumi away from them, banging the door close and giving them a death glare as a warning for their behavior.
After class, they both go bowling with their friends. Izumi, unlike everyone else, has yet to record a full strike because his ball mysteriously curves away from the center pins. While Neko advises Shikimori to be cute in front of Izumi, she transforms into a full-fledged bowling connoisseur as Izumi encourages her to do her best. As a result, her scores are filled with full strikes as the audience gathers and cheers.
Before the episode ends, Shikimori saves Izumi from a flying newspaper that is about to hit Izumi in the head. She also kicks a falling pylon sign in front of Izumi just as it is about to hit her unlucky boyfriend.
While they talk about Izumi's misfortunes, Shikimori says she's used to it and that Izumi doesn't need to feel sorry for himself. She also declares that she only needs Izumi by her side, regardless of what others say. As a result, Izumi is carried away by her girlfriend's coolness, informing her that he is in love with her, much to Shikimori's embarrassment.
