Shazam! Star Zachary Levi Defends James Gunn New DC Decisions: “He Understands Comic Books, Guys”

James Gunn may have been reconstructing the DCU from the ground up, but DC fans continue to question just what exactly he has in store for the franchise, specifically right after he had decided Wonder Woman 3 and Man of Steel 2 will no longer be in development, as well as Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Black Adam, in spite of the constant hype it received that The Rock’s DC debut would be the beginning of the new DC era.

Among one of the many recasting rumors, Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi was on the list in which it’s possible he will get recast from his current status as DC’s Shazam hero. However, the actor addressed this by stating clearly on his instagram live that: “At this point right now, I’m still that character. I have not had any outgoing conversations with the bosses. We have a movie coming out in March. I have no idea what’s going to ultimately happen to me. [But] I think I’m in a pretty good position…”

During Levi’s instagram live, amid the stirrup on his potential recast from Shazam role, the actor reassures fans that the new DC Studios executive James Gunn knows what he’s doing, all the while defending that Levi had worked with both Gunn and Safran plenty of times to not recognize a good strategy boiling for the future of the new DC.

“He understands comic books, guys. He understands worldbuilding, he understands how to do right by the canon and also by the characters and also by the audience. And [DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran]’s there, too — he’s an incredible diplomat and business person. I’ve worked with him now for years. Just breathe. It’s gonna be okay. It’s gonna be better than okay.”

Honestly, I wouldn’t know what to feel if they were able to once again recast another fan-favorite hero like Shazam. Zachary Levi plays the character so well, it’s hard to imagine someone else stepping up to the plate. Thankfully, Gunn did confirm in a tweeted reply that he will not be recasting him, saying that “We’re not recasting everyone, except The Suicide Squad.”

In the meantime, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently slated for its theatrical release on March 17, 2023.
