Ever since DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn announced the new DCU slate titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, the future of the heroes outside the slate has casted doubt on lasting long within the reconstruction. One of those heroes happens to be Shazam, according to Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David Sandberg.
To keep you up to speed, Shazam! star Zachary Levi was previously speculated to be making his DCU exit soon, and while the actor remains excited to still be working on the sequel as the titular hero, director Sandberg sheds light on why he doubts Shazam would have any place in the new DCU future.
“The finished movie was delivered [at the] end of October last year, so right before he officially began the job.” Sandberg replied to a Reddit comment claiming Gunn must’ve edited the Shazam sequel, “Sure, sometimes productions can add scenes or do changes very last minute, but nothing has changed on Shazam. It’s a freestanding story and they’ve told me it doesn’t affect or interfere with future DC plans, so no reason to change anything.”

Now, when it comes to conceptualizing a collective universe, surely, the films and series involved should correlate to everything the new DCU is bound to establish, right? And Shazam! Fury of the Gods is not on the list, so this certainly spells trouble for the future of Shazam staying in the DCU.
Levi very much puts his trust in Gunn being the most knowledgeable comic book fan and writer, whether or not his character gets to be included in the new DCU slate. The most Levi could say back in December last year was, “As of this point right now, I’m still that character. I have no idea what’s going to ultimately happen to me [but] I think I’m in a pretty good position.”
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently slated for its theatrical release on March 17. Check out more details about it here.
