Shaman King is based on a 1998-2004 shonenmanga. As is the case with many popular works, the manga received an anime adaptation while still ongoing, meaning that the ending the creators intended for us never made it to our screens. The 2021 version is a remake set to make amends, not unlike the reboots of Fullmetal Alchemist and Fruits Basket.
Shaman King follows Yoh Asakura, who wants to become a shaman; an all-powerful being with the ability to summon spirits and manipulate the world according to their will. To achieve his dream, Yoh must come victorious out of a competition that only takes place once every 500 years.
A few episodes earlier, Chocolove McDonnel, often known as Joco (and rightly so because it is and has always been wrong to have a black character with that name) was introduced. Now viewers get to see more of his backstory, as well as his fight with Peyote Diaz.
Joko's goal is to save the world through laughter, and as naive as it sounds, many fans think he's a complex character and a great addition to Ren's team.
