Marvel's Secret Invasion might feature aliens but the cast and crew insist it is more grounded than other Marvel Cinematic Universe shows. In fact, the upcoming series is actually inspired by what is arguably the most grounded MCU film Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Secret Invasion director Ali Selim and producer Jonathan Schwartz recently spoke to Total Film magazine where they addressed the show's comparisons to Captain America 2 (via GamesRadar). Selim admitted that this was one of the main reasons why he was drawn to the project in the first place.
"The first conversations I had [with Marvel] were, 'Nobody flies in the air in the show,'" Selim recalled. "I realized, 'Yeah, they're doing something very different, and that's exciting.'"
Schwartz agrees, confirming that Captain America 2 was one of the main influences on Secret Invasion.
"The Winter Soldier certainly gave us a lot of confidence that we could tell a
story in that space that felt more like a paranoid thriller," Schwartz said. He then pointed out that the upcoming MCU series also raises the stakes while exploring a story that's all about Nick Fury.
"Secret Invasion takes that a step further, and you really get to dig into Nick. It becomes much more character-focused in a way that I really love," Schwartz said.
It's an exciting tease at the upcoming show and we certainly can't wait to see what happens in Secret Invasion this June.
Secret Invasion will bring back Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Don Cheadle as James "Rhodey" Rhodes, and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross.
They will be joined by Kingsley Ben-Adir as the villainous Skrull Gravik, Emilia Clarke as Talos' daughter G'iah, and Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, a high-ranking MI6 agent with connections to Nick Fury.
Marvel's Secret Invasion will consist of six episodes and is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on June 21, 2023.
