The reception of the recent MCU series Secret Invasion has been divisive at best, especially in the aftermath of the finale where it became the worst-reviewed MCU episode to date.

Considering that the series has been deemed an "event" and it is based on a popular storyline from the comics, fans were disappointed and frustrated about the quality that the series ended up having and it made them wonder about its actual importance to the rest of the MCU.

It also doesn't help that some of the Phase Four and Five projects haven't been well-received in addition to this series and it is seemingly a sign that the franchise is perhaps (or already) in its downward trend at the moment.

Now, one of the key figures behind the series has responded to the mixed reviews and his answer may surprise you.

Ali Selim Discusses Secret Invasion's Mixed Reception

Speaking with Variety, director Ali Selim was asked about his thoughts surrounding the divisive reviews that Secret Invasion has been getting ever since the first episode aired six weeks ago.

However, he responded by claiming that he is not aware of the reviews, but he also shared that he finds it understandable that there are fans who might be disappointed about its overall results.

"Oh, I don’t read reviews. With all due respect. For me, I view all the storytelling work I do as a dialogue with an audience. When the show is finished and put up on the screen, that’s my half of the dialogue," he said.

"And the audience then starts their half of the response to it. I think that’s valuable, but I don’t know. I don’t know how to answer the question."

The director continued, "I don’t feel bad about mixed reviews. If you had unanimously good reviews, every movie would gross $10 billion, trillion dollars, right?"

"[Projects] resonate with different people at different times for different reasons, and Marvel has a very devoted — even rabid — fan base who have expectations and when their expectations aren’t fulfilled, they move in the other direction; they give it a thumbs down."

It sounds like Selim has no definitive response to the show's divisive reception as he gave a broad answer on his reaction and he established that he has no intention to find out what the fans think about his work.

At the end of the day, whether it was a disappointment or not, this could be a lesson learned for Marvel Studios as they're expanding the MCU even further and perhaps the divisive reception is a wakeup call for them to focus on quality again.
