The 30-year-old’s first rise to success was being featured on songs by Disclosure and Naughty Boy. From there, they won the 2014 Brit Critics’ Choice Award and BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll.

In the same year, they dropped his debut album, In the Lonely Hour, featuring the lead single “Lay Me Down” and the second single “Money on My Mind,” which later became the second No. 1 song in the U.K.

It also spawned the third track, “Stay with Me,” which made it big internationally, becoming No. 1 in the U.K. and No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The tracks “I’m Not the Only One” and “Like I Can” also successfully entered the top 10.

Their first album alone won four major awards at the 57th Grammys: Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. It also nabbed two nominations: Album of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

Smith also won the Golden Globe Award and the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the Spectre theme song “Writing’s on the Wall” with Jimmy Napes.

Their second studio album, The Thrill of It All, came in November 2017 to another huge success, followed by the release of “Dancing with the Stranger” with Nomani in 2019.

“I grew up next to a highway in nowhere Germany, and my mother believed me that I was a girl, and I wouldn’t be here without her and her support,” Petras said.

She also received a standing ovation during her speech, thanking the “incredible transgender legends” before her, like Madonna and the later Grammy-nominated artist, Sophie.
