Its own stars have criticized Stranger Things for being indifferent to killing off its major characters, like Sadie Sink, after her role, Max, slipped into a coma in the fourth season finale. Now, Sink herself has weighed in on the issue, believing the Duffer brothers have reasons for letting her character live until Stranger Things Season 5.

Sink became one of the series’ most notable characters when she joined the show in the second season. Now that the last and final season is about to come, will Sink’s Max live or die in Stranger Things Season 5?

Sadie Sink Weighs in on if Max Should Live or Die

In a talk on the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, the 20-year-old shared that her character’s death in the fourth season finale would hugely impact the show, but she trusted that the Duffer brothers had plans to keep Max alive.

“I didn’t know this until I read it in an interview, but I think Matt and Ross [Duffer] were planning to kill me off, like completely kill me off, and that was in the original plan for the season, but then they did change it,” she revealed.

“What I do know is that the Duffers are very smart, they’re very calculated, and they’d only choose to kill a character off if it was good for the plot, or would come in handy later, and they’d only keep a character if it was going to serve the plot later as well,” she continued. “So, everything is very calculated, they know what they’re doing, but I understand, I think, if Max did completely die, then it would’ve had a bigger impact for sure, but I’m personally happy she’s still around.”

The Reason for Keeping Max Alive

According to ScreenRant, the Duffer brothers’ good reason for keeping Max alive is probably because she has a major role to play in Stranger Things Season 5.

She’s maybe the key to saving Hawkins from the wrath of Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) as the Upside Down has now seeped through the small town.

Suppose she died in the fourth season finale. In that case, it might demoralize her best friend, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), her love interest, Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and the rest of the gang, giving Vecna another taste of victory.

Though Vecna’s plan to put Max down almost succeeded, he’s probably not aware that she has survived, and it may be a big surprise to the villain if she wakes up in the next season.
