Russo Brothers No Longer on the Shortlist for Secret Wars Following MCU Leak Suggesting New Potential Director

Marvel Studios unveiled a bunch of surprises at the last San Diego Comic-Con. But there's no denying that the headliner of the event was the next two Avengers films: Avengers: Secret Wars and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, both set to hit theaters in 2025.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton was recently announced to helm Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but the director who would develop Secret Wars remains to be seen. Of course, fans have been campaigning for the obvious choice, the Russo Brothers, as the perfect director for the film since they have already established a triumphant career inside the MCU and directed notable Marvel films, including the groundbreaking culmination of the Infinity Saga: Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Sadly, it seems Marvel Studios has already found the potential director with Black Panther's Ryan Coogler, officially crossing out the Russo Brothers on the shortlist.

During the last episode of The Weekly Planet Podcast, host James Clement dropped a massive leak about Avengers: Secret Wars, claiming that the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler is currently in talks to direct Secret Wars, according to his very reliable source. See his full quote below:

“And Ryan Coogler, here’s another scoop, Mason, is at the very least one of the directors, is currently in talks for Secret Wars. Which makes a lot of sense and yeah, the source here says, this is a reliable source, this person says ‘a fairly obvious choice.’ And it is. That makes sense.”

To be fair, Coogler is undoubtedly as fitting as the Russo Brothers to helm Secret Wars. Coogler's directorial debut in the MCU in 2018's Black Panther was a monumental success crossing the 1 billion mark at the global box office and is also recognized as the second highest-grossing film of 2018, next to Avengers: Infinity War.  More amazingly, Black Panther is the first superhero movie ever to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.

The Russo Brothers on Directing Avengers: Secret Wars

While some fans have been rooting for Joe and Anthony Russo to return in Secret Wars, it appears that the Marvel duo doesn't need much persuasion to helm the film. In a previous interview with Deadline, the Russo Brothers revealed that Secret Wars is the MCU project they want to take on next. See Joe's full quote below:

"I keep saying Secret Wars because that was one of the first books that I really fell in love with as a kid. This notion of, you know, event storytelling, and I think that's part of the reason that we gravitate so strongly towards these event films and these ensemble films is the notion that you can contain so many different characters and so many different points of view and galvanize them around a story point is really compelling to us."

Joe's revelation about being a fan of the Marvel Comics Secret Wars ultimately makes them the potential candidate to helm the film. However, if this leak is true, this might just imply that Marvel Studios is now giving the opportunity to their outstanding Phase 4 directors, mainly Destin Daniel Cretton and Ryan Coogler.

Avengers: Secret Wars is set to hit theaters on November 7, 2025.
