Legendary film director Quentin Tarantino is back to square one after sources say that The Movie Critic is no longer in the works. Previously, Tarantino had wanted The Movie Critic to be his 10th and final film.

After being in the early stages of production since June 2023 though, multiple sources have now said that Tarantino is dropping The Movie Critic as his final film “due to a change of heart”. It is unclear what Tarantino or the sources meant by this, but it could be that the director now has bigger ambitions for what he announced as his last hurrah in Hollywood.

The Movie Critic was initially meant to be either a prequel or a sequel to Tarantino’s most recent project—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, where Brad Pitt was to retake his leading role as Cliff Booth. But, as reported, Tarantino is stepping away from The Movie Critic and is now seeking new and more creative ways to go out with a bang.

Before departing from The Movie Critic, Tarantino had been working on an R-rated Star Trek movie for Paramount. However, The Revenant's screenwriter, Mark Smith—who was initially working alongside Tarantino for the project—said that the retiring director is rather conflicted with the idea of Star Trek being his last film.

‘‘If I can just wrap my head around the idea that Star Trek could be my last movie, the last thing I ever do. Is this how I want to end it?’’ Tarantino supposedly told Smith.

Over the years, Tarantino has maintained he would only be making 10 films as he did not want to put “mud” on his legacy by making subpar movies after the 10th one. (He has made 10 films already, but he counts the Kill Bill series as one movie). Because of this, he is now working hard to ensure that his final film will be his best project yet, with zero compromises in sight.

In light of this news, Tarantino is once again brainstorming for ways to top every project he has worked on so far. However, he has a bit more clarity on what comes after his final film.

The director has expressed interest in still working in the creative industry even after retirement. He has even entertained the idea of directing theatrical plays or one-time series/miniseries like FX’s ‘Shōgun’, but he has never mentioned the possibility of returning or doing any sort of surprise comeback in a directorial role, once retired.

While thinking about what his final film could be, Tarantino is also busy writing as a novelist, with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (based on his movie) being his debut work.
