Princess Diana sat down for an interview with Martin Bashir in 1995. And it was during their conversation that the Princess of Wales declared that there were three of them in her marriage. At the time, Princess Diana was referring to Queen Consort Camilla, who was having an affair with King Charles.
The controversial interview is also depicted in The Crown Season 5. But prior to this, the public learned that Princess Diana was tricked into giving that talk because she thought that those close to her were spying on her every move.
Princess Diana’s Responses To Questions About The Queen Mother Were Very Beige, Author Claims
During a recent discussion on the To Di For Daily podcast, royal author Gareth Russell said that Princess Diana avoided discussions about one member of the royal family while talking to Bashir, and it was none other than the Queen Mother.
“[In the] Martin Bashir interview, apparently he tried to get [Diana] to say something negative about the Queen Mother. He kept asking her questions and like a pro, Diana knocked them down,” he said (via Cheat Sheet).
Russell also said that Princess Diana’s responses to Bashir’s questions about the Queen Mother were dull, very beige, and deliberately uninteresting. And she did right by herself by doing this because she was aware of how popular the Queen Mother was.
“[Diana] knew that if she said anything, that was going to take the focus off the story that she was telling. [It’s] really smart,” he said.

Princess Diana Claims The Queen Mother Looked At Her With Strange Eyes?
But years before the Panorama interview, Princess Diana shared her real thoughts and feelings about the Queen Mother during her phone conversation with James Gilbey. But little did Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom knows the call was being recorded.
“His grandmother is always looking at me with a strange look in her eyes. It’s not hatred; it’s a sort of interest and pity mixed into one. ‘I am not quite sure. I don’t understand it. Every time I look, she’s looking at me, then looks away and smiles…,” Princess Diana reportedly said as written in Do Let’s Have Another Drink! Queen Mother Stopped Mentioning Princess Diana’s Name After She Separated From King Charles?
In 2017, Major Colin Burgess told Daily Mail that the Queen Mother stopped mentioning Princess Diana’s name after she separated from King Charles.
“For all the friendliness and warmth which made her so popular there was a streak of steel in the Queen Mother and I got a glimpse of what it could be like to cross her shortly after I began working for her in the summer of 1994. Once Diana split from Charles, she was very much persona non grata, and I never again heard her name mentioned by, or in front of, the Queen Mum, not even when I saw her a couple of months after Diana’s death, by which time I had left her employ,” Burgess said.
