Years ago, People's editorial director Michelle Tauber talked about Princess Diana's "Revenge Dress." She said that while some people would've decided to stay out of the limelight after their spouses admitted to being unfaithful, Princess Diana decided to go the exact opposite.
"On a human level for Diana, you can only imagine how upsetting that would have been, not only to hear that but to know that now the world has heard it. Effectively, Charles has aired some serious dirty laundry. Some may have decided this was altogether too much and tried to avoid the cameras, stay out of the limelight — just let the storm pass. That is not what Diana chose to do that night," she said.
Deputy style director Brittany Talarico added that Princess Diana knew that all eyes will be on her when she arrives at the gala. But she still opted to go. In fact, she decided to wear her "Revenge Dress" at the last minute.
"Of course, Diana knew that all eyes were going to be on her. She didn't have to say anything with words. It was a fashion response — that dress became her clear message to Charles and the world," she said.

Princess Diana Decided To Wear Her' Revenge Dress' At The Last Minute, Source Claims
Costume designer William Ivey Long revealed that Princess Diana was supposed to wear a Valentino dress to the gala. But she decided to wear Christina Stambolian's creation at the last minute.
"She decided that she was going to fight back, and she decided that she would choose a dress that she had previously rejected as being a little too much. And she would put that on and go out on the town," he said.

This week, royal expert Kinsey Schofield told Page Six that there's something so iconic about Princess Diana's "Revenge Dress." So, any replication of the outfit seems like cosplay.
In The Crown Season 5, viewers will witness Princess Diana's style evolution.
"I do think that just watching what I've seen so far, they are projecting that evolution of her confidence and her feelings through her wardrobe. At the beginning of the season, in the early 90s, she's dressing like almost the Easter mom, in pastels… as it gets further into the series and closer to the end of the decade, she's sexier, you're seeing pop culture's influence on Diana," Schofield said.
